The stories that shaped a nation, and how we make them
Britain Untold is an independent online history publication. We tell the stories from 2,000 years of British history, and from the wider world, that most of us were never taught at school: the people, turning points and strange moments that deserve to be remembered.
What we publish
The site brings together three collections under one roof:
- Britain Untold: British history from Roman Britain and the Vikings to the Tudors, the Victorians and the World Wars.
- Empire Untold: the history of the British Empire, including its forgotten chapters.
- History Uncovered: global history, from ancient civilisations to the modern world.
All articles are free to read. The site is supported by advertising.
Editorial standards
Articles are credited to Britain Untold Editorial, the publication's editorial byline. We want readers to know exactly how our articles are made:
- AI-assisted writing. Our articles are produced with AI writing tools. Each one starts from a story topic that must pass an automated fact-check (checking that the people, events and dates are real and correctly described) before anything is written.
- Source grounding. Where a matching reference article exists, the writing step is given its text as the factual reference and told not to add names, dates or numbers that are not in it. Where a reference source was used, it is linked at the end of the article.
- Narrative style. We write history as storytelling. Scene-setting is used to bring events to life; the key facts (who, what, when, where and the outcome) are the parts we check.
- Corrections. We correct mistakes when they are reported to us (see below).
Images
The illustrations on our articles are AI-generated artwork created to depict the events described. They are not photographs and are not historically exact; every article illustration is labelled as AI-generated. When we use a genuine historical photograph, it will be clearly marked as an archive photograph, with its source and licence credited.
Corrections policy
If you think something in an article is wrong, please email hello@britainuntold.co.uk with the article link and what you believe is incorrect, ideally with a source. We review every report. Where an error is confirmed, we correct the article.
